How the tiers actually differ

Lab is for a single lab at one site: research, contract, classroom, in-house QC. Unlimited users, SSO with Google and Microsoft, domain binding to auto-onboard anyone with @yourcompany.com, the full prep journal, batch mode, recipe book, and atlas.

Multi-Lab covers up to 5 labs in the same organization (a multi-site manufacturer, an FA service bureau with branches, a university department with several PI-led labs). Adds cross-lab atlas and recipe sharing, a larger 250 GB storage allowance, and annual invoice / PO billing.

Unlimited removes the lab cap entirely for organizations that have outgrown Multi-Lab. Includes priority email support and annual invoice billing.

Materials Prep does not currently offer SAML SSO with custom IdPs or SCIM provisioning. If your IT requires either as a procurement condition, we're probably not the right fit yet.

FAQ

Common questions about pricing.

Is there a free trial?
Yes, 14 days, no credit card. Owners on Free or Lab tier can start a one-time Multi-Lab trial from the Plan section in org settings (one button). The trial unlocks cross-lab atlas and recipe sharing, additional labs (up to 5), and the 250 GB Multi-Lab storage cap. SSO and domain binding are already included on Lab, so they don't change.
What happens at the end of the trial?
Your org reverts to its base tier (Free or Lab). No charge, since we don't collect a card to start the trial, there's nothing to charge. All your data stays in place, including anything you created during the trial. Multi-Lab-only features (cross-lab sharing, additional labs) lock or hide; shared atlas entries keep working. If you exceeded the base tier's storage cap during the trial, you'll see a warning to upgrade or remove files, and new uploads pause until you're back under cap.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Cancel from your billing portal and your subscription stops at the end of the current billing period. Monthly subscriptions are not refunded for the unused portion of the current month; annual subscriptions are non-refundable past 30 days from purchase. Your data is retained and read-only after cancellation; you can reactivate or export at any time.
What's the difference between Lab and Multi-Lab?
Lab is one lab at one site, with unlimited users in that lab. It includes SSO with Google and Microsoft, domain binding, the full prep journal, recipes, atlas, and customer-facing reports (standard prep reports and the certificate of conformance, each in both PDF and editable Word formats). Multi-Lab covers up to 5 labs in the same organization (e.g. a multi-site manufacturer or a university department with several PI-led labs) and adds cross-lab sharing of recipes and atlas entries plus a larger storage allowance.
Are reports available on the Free tier?
No. Free covers the full prep journal — samples, batches, recipes, etchants, atlas — so a solo metallographer can run their bench inside Materials Prep without paying. Generating customer-facing deliverables (standard prep reports and the certificate of conformance, in PDF and editable Word formats) is a Lab-tier feature. The 14-day Multi-Lab trial includes reports if you'd like to try them before upgrading.
Can I edit the reports after Materials Prep generates them?
Yes. Every report comes in two formats: a locked PDF for delivery and an editable Word (.docx) document for any last-minute tweaks. Drop in your customer's logo, edit the cover paragraph, add a signed-off conclusion in your usual letterhead, then save as PDF or send as Word. Both files are saved to your lab's reports and re-downloadable any time.
Are there per-seat fees or user caps?
No. Every paid tier includes unlimited users. Lab is one lab with as many teammates as you need; Multi-Lab is up to 5 labs each with unlimited users; Unlimited removes the lab cap as well. We charge for labs, not seats, because that's the unit that actually scales in metallography.
How does the storage cap work?
Storage is org-wide and applies to journal images and report PDFs. Atlas contributions are unmetered on every plan. If you approach the cap, you'll see a warning in the dashboard; if you exceed it, new uploads are blocked until you delete files or upgrade.
Do you offer annual invoicing or PO-based billing?
Yes, on Multi-Lab and Unlimited for annual subscriptions. Choose 'Pay by invoice' at checkout or contact us, and we'll send a Stripe invoice payable by ACH, wire, or PO with NET-30 terms. Useful when your AP department can't process a credit card.
Is there an education or non-profit discount?
Universities, government labs, and non-profits, please reach out before purchasing. We're not publishing a fixed academic discount yet, but we have flexibility for research labs and we want metallography teaching labs on the platform.
What is M.AI (Metallogic AI), and is it included in my plan?
M.AI is an optional add-on, not a tier. It adds Mai, an in-app prep assistant that recommends recipes, looks up etchants from the PACE catalog, and troubleshoots prep defects from photos. $49 per organization per month, available on every plan including Free. Add or remove it anytime from the customer portal; it doesn't change your base subscription.
How does M.AI handle my data?
When you use Mai, the content of your messages, attached images, and the relevant sample metadata (material, hardness, mount, recipe history) are sent to Anthropic for processing and returned. We do not use your prompts to train models, and Anthropic's data processing terms apply. Mai's recommendations are advisory; validate any recipe before using it for QA-graded work. Full disclosure on the privacy page.
Do you support SAML SSO with our IdP, or SCIM provisioning?
Materials Prep includes SSO with Google and Microsoft on every paid tier, which covers most lab teams. We don't currently support SAML with custom IdPs or SCIM provisioning, and we aren't planning to in this generation. If your IT department requires either as a procurement condition, we may not be the right fit yet.
How is my lab's data secured?
Data lives in Postgres with row-level security on every table. Your lab's samples, recipes, and images are scoped to your lab and your roles (admin, technician, viewer). Images are kept in private storage with signed URLs, never publicly served. See the Trust page for the full disclosure.
